Arithmatical - Problems On Numbers

DIRECTIONS : Problems based on Numbers.
6. In a pair of fractions, fractions A is twice the fraction B and the product of two fractions is 2/25. What is the value of fraction A?
  A.  1/5
  B.  1/25
  C.  2/5
  D.  Data inadequate
Solution
A =2B ‹=› B= 1/2 A.
So, AB = 2/25
‹=› 1/2A2= 2/25
‹=› A2= 4/25
A= 2/5.
7. The difference between two numbers is 1356. When the larger number is divided by the smaller one, the quotient is 6 and the remainder is 15. The smaller number is
  A.  240
  B.  270
  C.  295
  D.  360
Solution
Let the numbers be x and (x + 1356).
Then, x + 1356= 6x+15
‹=› 5x = 1350
x = 270.

8. The product of two numbers is 120 and the sum of their squares is 289. The sum of the number is
  A.  20
  B.  23
  C.  169
  D.  199
Solution
Let the numbers be x and y.
Then, xy = 120 and x2 + y2 = 289.
Therefore, (x + y)2= x2 + y2 + 2xy
=289 + (2 × 120)
= 529.
Therefore, (x + y)= √529
= 23.
9. If doubling a number and adding 20 to the result gives the same answer as multiplying the number by 8 and taking away 4 from the product, the number is
  A.  2
  B.  3
  C.  4
  D.  6
Solution
Let the number be x.
Then, 2x + 20 = 8x - 4
‹=› 6x= 24
‹=› x = 4.
10. Find the number which when multiplied by 15 is increased by 196.
  A.  14
  B.  20
  C.  26
  D.  28
Solution
Let the number be x.
Then, 5x - x =196
‹=› 14 x= 196
‹=› x = 14.
