Linking of major rivers of India?
Points in Favour:-
- Indian landscape is a paradox. Our country is so vast and varied that we witness havocs of drought and flood simultaneously.
- Over the centuries our country has been suffering from periodic drought and flood.
- Linking of rivers and managing their water will help our government fights this menace with success. We can use water to our need and advantage.
- Inter–state water dispute is now a recurring reality. Linking of rivers and management of water will nip this evil in the bud.
- Power problem and other water related concerns of the country can also be eased though this project.
Against:-
- The project is massive and it would involve gigantic investment.
- India is a poor country and as Pritish Nandy, journalist and writer, rightly points out, Rs. 5,60,000 crore which has been kept aside for this huge, high brand scheme can wipe out poverty and joblessness.
- This river linking project will involve construction of major dams and canals which in turn will result in the submerging of wide forest areas, disruption of wildlife, displacement of human population and disturbance to our ecological system.
